Organizational Background

GREDO is an indigenous local NGO.  Non-profit non-partial, non- political and voluntary organization based in Baidoa. To reach the most affected grass-root communities in Bay and Bakool regions and lower Shebelle effectively and efficiently, the necessity of local partnership in relief program appeared. Responding to the partnership need, a group of Somali intellectuals and well-wishers initiated in December 1992 a local non-governmental organization called Gargaar Relief and Development Organization (GREDO) the organization has implemented during these period different projects including relief and emergency programs and later improved into rehabilitation and developmental programs.


JOB TITLE:  Nutrition Project Officer
TEAM/PROGRAMME: Nutrition Team LOCATION: Bay- Diinsor/ Buurhakaba

Level 3:  the role holder will have contact with children and/or young people either frequently (e.g. once a week or more) or intensively (e.g. four days in one month or more or overnight) because they work in country programs; or are visiting country programs; ore because they are responsible for implementing the police checking/vetting process staff.


To establish and ensure that the OTP  is functioning properly, providing care  to severe acutely malnourished children without complications within the facility in accordance with Somalia IMAM protocols and guidelines  and principles of good practice. The host post holder will be start for nutrition interventions in .Diinsor/Buurhakaba

Reports to: Nutrition  Manager

•     Plan and organise OTP at the health facilities in liaison with Field manager.

•     Ensure consistence supply of RUTF and Routine medication for OTP in liason with logisitics team and Health manager

•     Work with MoH staff and officials to ensure all aspects of the OTP programme are understood and agreed by MoH; this may include capacity training of MOH staff and ensure appropriate referrals of SAM with complications to the inpatient facility in Kismayo.

•     Work closely with the Community Mobilisers Community health Workers/CNVs and the community at large in ensuring the community component of SAM management is implemented appropriately.

•     Ensure good quality triage / that new arrivals are seen as a priority

•     Ensure cases not meeting admission criteria return home as early as possible and understand why their child is not admitted

•     Supervise the activities of the OTP  teams at the he health facility, to include issuance of RUTF in accordance     with the protocol.

•     Ensure all OTP team members are familiar with their posts, and take the necessary measures in order to correct lacks

Conduct CMAM training for all OTP and outpatient health staffs at the facilities with a focus on SAM management.

•     In collaboration with the Nutrition  manager, recruit and put an OTP team in place to work closely with nurses in implementation of the OTPs.

•     Work closely with the teams to ensure all children are measured correctly

•     Ensure all criteria are respected and understood by the teams, and the Somalia IMAM guidelines is adhered to during implementation.

•     Review the weekly forms completed by staff to ensure completion, accuracy and coherence

•     Undertake individual evaluations with the team

•     Ensure adequate availability of all medical and food supplies for each distribution, input in to creation and maintenance of a monthly distribution plan and ensure stock is pre-positioned as planned with field manager and logistics team

•     Prepare weekly OTP/SFP statistics and supervise data entry

•     Submit a weekly  and monthly report of the tally of statistics for each site (one form per site per week) using the CAM reporting tool and the UNICEF reporting tool for the cluster.

•     Report any progress and any problems in a timely manner

•     Through liaison with the community outreach/nutrition workers, provide effective follow up of all cases – particularly:

•     Ensure the prompt tracing of children who are absent from the programme in coordination with the CM officer

•     Request specific children to be followed up as required (newly enrolled children, sick children, long stay children / children not gaining weight, children with social problems etc.).

•     •           Attend regular nutrition meetings

•     Respect the dignity of the beneficiaries, carers and members of the community

•     Assist in any other tasks when required

•     Degree in Nutrition, Nurse or any relevant courses.

•     Experience of emergency nutrition work (preferably SC and OTP) and implementation of feeding programmes, including monitoring and evaluation

•     Experience in conducting nutrition assessments and an understanding of nutritional surveillance and information systems

•     Proven capacity of management, leadership and teamwork

•     Excellent communication skills and a willingness to be respectful, kind, sensitive and empathise with all beneficiaries, their careers and the staff

•     Willingness and capacity to be flexible and accommodating when faced with difficult and frustrating working conditions

•     Demonstrable ability at report writing

•     Prepared to live and work in an uncertain security environment

•     Ability and willingness to frequently travel and stay at the field

•     Commitment to and understanding of GREDO  aims, values and principles

•     Fluency in written and spoken English and local languages

•     Computer literacy and good Microsoft Excel Skills


•     Nutrition filed ,Qualified nurse with primary health care / community health care experience Health / Nutrition background

·         Working experience in Bay region  is an assets
