Identification of Suitable Farmer Field School

Locations within Dhusamareb and Adado Districts

  1. Introduction

CPD with the support of Somalia Stability Fund (SSF) is implementing the Economic Development and Livelihood Project targeting Dhusamareb District and by extension Adado District. The project aims at supporting the livestock producers, aggregators and milk retailers (Milk value chain actors) in addressing the challenges they encounter working jointly to provide solutions that will see to increased milk production, sales and a rise in the income for local pastoralist livelihoods.

The training sessions as per the curriculum will be 100% field based with field observation/demonstration sites being set up within the farm.

The demonstration plots will be developed to cover the different relevant areas related to the pastoralist production promotion and also alternative income generation especially for the women. The plots will contain various fodder crops such as Sudan, Boma Rhodes grasses, sorghum and cowpeas, drip irrigation for small scale irrigation of fields for kitchen gardening and also large scale production of fruits and vegetables which can provide an alternative revenue generation for women, water conservation methods for drylands.

CPD proposes to work with local farms that can act as demonstration farms to help in the training of pastoralist producers on good husbandry skills to improve their milk production and incomes.

  1. The project will help upon identification of suitable farms that meet the set criteria, establish 3 demonstration farms to be called Farmer Field Schools.
  2. The farms will offer practical training to local pastoralists clustered around the farms in enhancing the use of better modern agricultural and pastoral methods for improved productivity.
  • The farms will help create among the producers, awareness on improved rangeland management, dryland fodder production and preservation, livestock disease management, conservation agriculture techniques and rain water harvesting.

2.      Selection of the Farmer Field Schools

Among the proposed selection criteria for farmers field schools include the following conditions:-

 

  1. Farm size to be ideally 20 acres in a suitable location to allow for proposed activities.
  2. Have access to a perennial water supply to help in supplying required water for the various demonstration activities.
  3. To have some prior level of development by the farmer.
  4. Level of skills and knowledge of lead farmer (owner) who will become the lead facilitator for the proposed farmer groups.
  5. Suitability of the land for production (not rocky surface).
  6. The farm’s location should be accessibility in terms of roads and security.
  7. How to apply:

Interested consultants should submit via email the following-:

  1. A partnering proposal that addresses the above indicated requirements (requirementsa-f indicated above).
  2. Proof of ownership either as a family or individual of the indicated land.
  • A brief on the assets (including animals)
  1. A detailed summary of current (and potential) production activities undertaken in the farm currently.
  2. Any other relevant document supporting the application.
