ROLE PURPOSE:

The child protection assistant will have direct engagement with children, parents and community based structures. In close coordination with child protection project officer and child protection manager, the post holder will jointly plan and execute an integrated lifesaving assistance child protection for drought and conflict affected population in Bari and Nugal.

The post holder will ensure that children are central to this intervention and their participation is boosted, to protect from harm, exploitation, violence and abuse, through the mainstreaming child protection responses into other sectors as well to stand-alone interventions in certain districts. Through the direct engagement with community based structures mobilize, identify, document and report children with protection concerns-unaccompanied and separated children (UASC) through case management, family tracing and reunification (FTR), providing direct support to girls and boys survivors (or those at risk) of harm, exploitation and abuse.

The post holder will ensure that structured psychosocial support services to children in distress through community based structured are effectively implemented.  This will be through the establishment and strengthening of community based child protection structures, such as child welfare committees (CWCs) and IDP committees to protect children and increase awareness. SC will strengthen the child protection and Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) coordination mechanisms in place, including referral pathways.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Diploma in Community development or other relevant certificates.
  • 2 years’ experience of working with communities at grass-root level
  • Have child protection materials and sensitivity to protection children’s rights and dignity
  • Ability to read and write in English as well as the national language
  • Have good engagement with community
  • Computer skills, with focus on word processing and excel
  • Strong morals viz. honesty, open and transparency, generosity, altruism and respect
  • Experience in working in harsh environment an added advantage
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations in diverse teams

Desirable requirements

  • Working knowledge of Child protection
  • Previous work experience with INGOs

SCOPE OF ROLE:

Reports to:  Child protection Officer

Dimensions: Save the Children works in 4 regions in Somalia with a current staff complement of approximately 650 staff.

 

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • In close coordination with project officer plan and implement monthly child protection response with the targeted communities in Puntland.
  • Engage and collaborate community based child protection structures to improve prevention and response measures.
  • Strengthen capacity of community based structures, child friendly space facilitators in applying an integrated training packages on child protection.
  • Undertake effective case management encompassing service provider mapping and referral mechanism.
  • Engage and document child protection concerns, issues and risk factors in the targeted communities through risk assessment tool.
  • Work closely with SCI other projects to strengthen case management practice at community level.
  • Implement structured trainings including life skills, psychosocial support sessions for children.
  • Identify and strengthen foster care parent to accommodate and provide interim support for separated and unaccompanied children

·         Provide daily, weekly and monthly information sharing with child protection officer in Garowe.
