COURSDESCRIPTION

The workshop adopts a problem-solving approach which would include lecture and hand on sessions. The focus would be to undertake research Methodology in Social sciences-based setting which includes planning, data collection, dataentry,data editing,data analysis,report writing and publications.Interactive learning sessions would focus on“how to do”including hands on training to use statistical software for social Science. The batch will have 20-30 participants registered on a first come basis.

The course is structured to act as a vehicle for analyzing your own quantitative research data and is aimed at learners embarking on postgraduate studies and junior Researchers.The course may be especially valuable for individuals returning to academic work after some absence from research, orto those who do not have a good foundation in data analysis using SPSS.

WORKSHOOBJECTIVES

The core objective of the workshop was to equip the research scholars with set of skills and potentiality to undertake the data analysis very effectively in the disciplines of social science and to turn completed research into publishable material of high quality in the form of M & E reports, articles, journals and books. This workshop is designed to offer the practical guidelines and direct the researchers through all the stages of data analysis from data entry problem to the advance statistical analysis.

The course intends to deal with variety of quantitative research methods used in social science researches. It also gives exposure to data analysis with the help of software packages. The workshop consists of both theory and practical. By the end programmewe are expected to develop conceptual clarity and practical knowledge to undertake quality research and writing good research papers field-reports and project proposals.

Day1: Introductory & Methodology Module

  • Strategies of data collection
  • Sampling and sampling procedure

Day2: introduction to SPSS

  • Introduction to data management in SPSS
  • What is SPSS?
  • The Four Windows
  • SPSS Overview
  • Dealing with Data o Data entering

Day 3: Data analysis using SPSS

  • Exploratory Factor analysis
  • Reliability test
  • Descriptive analysis (Graphs: Bar Chart, Pie Chart, Histogram, Scatter Plot/ Cross-tabs)
  • Calculating Measures of Central Tendency and Variability.

Day 4 and 5: Data analysis using SPSS

  • Correlation Analysis
  • Simple Linear Regression
  • Multiple Linear Regression and Model Checking diagnostics
  • Basic mediation analysis

METHODOLOGY

The training uses a range of methods, including presentation, group discussion and practical real-life exercises.

Dr. Ali Yassin Sheikh is an outstanding young scholar and assistant professor at SIMAD University. He holds Bachelor in Applied economics, MBA, MEPMand PhD in Business Administration (Entrepreneurship) from International University of Africa in Sudan (IUA), Kampla University and Sudan University of Science and Technology respectively. Ali’s research interests include business innovation, Macroeconomics, Performance measurements and new technologies, women entrepreneurship, and organizational communication.
