Background

Horizon Institute is an NGO that assists government and non-for-profit institutions to create and take advantage of development and capacity building opportunities to improve justice and governance systems. Horizon’s work lies at the intersection of human rights/rule of law, institution building and locally driven development. We integrate all three approaches to promote locally driven initiatives and implement projects that result in stronger communities.

Horizon Institute invites applications to fill the position of Court Monitor, a paid internship, from candidates with the necessary qualifications and experience as detailed below. The position will be based in Hargeisa, Somaliland.

Duties and Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Monitor and collect data from court hearings as directed;
  • Complete and fill monitoring sheets; and
  • Attend all necessary trainings to ensure monitoring is of the highest standard.

Qualifications

  • LLB holder or student studying for an LLB;
  • Knowledge of Somaliland’s legal and criminal justice system;
  • Native Somali speaker and proficiency in English;
  • Proven inter-personal skills;
  • Strong work ethic, ability to learn new skills and being a team player.

Start Date: 1 March 2019

Duration of Contract: 1 March 2019 – 30 April 2019

Compensation: Stipend of $250 per month

Deadline for application: 21 February 2019. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
