Background

Action Aid InternationalSomaliland (AAIS) is part of global federation working to end poverty and injustice with thousands of communities and millions of people across the planet guided by its strategy ‘People’s Action to End Poverty’ that ensures coherence, aligning with the poor and excluded people, re-asserting women’s rights, strengthening accountability, and building resilience against shocks & hazards.AAIS is planning to conduct ‘Training on Farmers’ Cooperatives at local and regional levelacross 9 target settlements in LRP2 underGabiley region.

The training is meant to educate farmers’ cooperatives and built their skills on farmers’ cooperatives. The training will build the capacity of farmer groups into platforms to discuss matters affecting their livelihoods.The main themes to cover in the training sessions include information sharing and networking of farmer organisations, to improve communication mechanismsacross farmer forums on marketing or selling products to harness value for money of aggro-products. As a part of these activities,Action Aid Somaliland seeks aqualified facilitator to conduct the above noted session.During the sessions, the farmers will be encouraged to tailor their strategies, products and services to their needs, to most marketable cereals or vegetables to increase profits.

  1. Specific Objectives

The core objectives of the training are the following:

  • Introduce key principles, structures and three-tier systems of farmers’cooperatives particularly primary cooperative at village level
  • Build capacity of farmers by defining the responsibility of every individual in line with the position in cooperative structure.
  • Discuss business part of agricultural products and how farmers can benefit from farmers’ cooperatives to maximise their profit.
  • Establish linkages of farmers’ cooperatives participating the workshop
  • Set up communication channels of the farmers’ cooperative and how frequent they have to hold their discussion forums.
  • Orientate cooperatives on formations of inter-cooperative discussions in order to influence market
  1. Methodologies

The potential facilitators are expected to use a combination of methods as outlined below:

  • User friendly Presentations
  • Case stories and sharing practical experience with participants
  • Brainstorming and discussion sessions
  • Participant presentations
  1. Expected Output
  • At the end of the workshop, the participants clearly understood principles and structures of farmer’s cooperatives.
  • The linkages among the famers’ cooperatives
  • Each participant should join to a cooperative if not before
  • At the end of the workshop, the participants should come up with work plans of their cooperative
  • A comprehensive Training report with case studies, testimonies, anecdotes and lesson learned regarding the training.
  1. DURATION OF THE ASSIGNMENT

The assignment will be completed within 3 working days; two (2) days for conducting the workshop and one (1) day for the reporting including travelling agreed from the date signed the contract

  1. Personal specifications
  • Degree in agriculture, social science or related fields
  • Minimum of two years of experience in conducting similar trainings
  • Ability to communicate in Somali language and write reports in English
  • Participatory methods in imparting knowledge to illiterate or semi-illiterate people
