COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is the introductory course that will introduce undergraduate and graduate students, junior researchers, policy makers into the world of social science research. It provides new knowledge how learner can conduct an organized enquiry that aims at providing information for solving identified problems. The following are the topics that will be taught in the course: meaning of research, types of research, tools for research, research planning and design, review of literature, nature of data, research methodology, research proposal, sampling techniques, performing data analysis techniques, presentation of research results and referencing styles among others.

The learning adopts a problem solving approach which would include lecture and hand on sessions. The focus would be to undertake research Methodology in Social sciences based setting which includes planning, data collection, data entry, data editing, data analysis, report writing and publications. Interactive learning sessions would focus on “how to do” including hands on training to use statistical software for social Science.

The course is structured to act as a vehicle for analyzing your own quantitative research data, and is aimed at learners embarking on post graduate studies and junior Researchers. The course may be especially valuable for individuals returning to academic work after some absence from research, or to those who do not have a good foundation in data analysis using SPSS.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The core objective of the workshop was to equip the research scholars, students and practitioners with set of skills and potentiality to undertake the data analysis very effectively in the disciplines of social science and to turn completed research into publishable material of high quality in the form of M & E reports, articles, journals and books. This course is designed to offer the practical guidelines and direct the researchers through all the stages of proposal writing, tools development, data collection, data analysis from data entry problem to the advance statistical analysis.

The course provides students with skills that are needed to conduct original, rigorous and reliable research and intends to deal with variety of quantitative research methods used in social science researches. It also gives exposure to data analysis with the help of software packages. The workshop consists of both theory and practical. By the end programme we are expected to develop conceptual clarity and practical knowledge to undertake quality research and writing good research papers, field-reports and project proposals.

During this first week, the general rule governing the conduct of the lecture will be discussed. Mode of assessment and the need for student attendance in class will be given. Moreover students’ expectations for the course will be documented.
2 ·         Understand the concept of Variables

·         Developing Research Model

·         Identifying and Defining Research Problem

o   Understanding the characteristics of the research problem.

o   How the research problem differs from the other parts of the research?

o   Discussion: Why is the research problem important?

o   Steps of Writing Research Problem (4 step approach)

Practical exercise will student writing a research Problem on a particular topic of their interest.
3&4 ·         Preparation of research proposal

o   General components of a typical proposal

o   Background and introduction section of the proposal

o   Purpose and objectives of the proposal

o   Research questions of the proposal

o   Scope of the study and significance

Practical exercise will student writing a introduction section on a particular topic of their interest.
5&6 ·         Review of literature

o   The Purpose of the Review

o    How to write the section on related literature  Types of Literature

o    Conceptual Framework

o   How to cite sources properly?

The learner will be asked to look for five journal materials each on a topic and produce a report on these literatures. This will be a good exercise to know how to conduct literature search as well as producing a report afterwards

o   Exercises will involve identifying the best approach for a particular type of research and justifying their choice.

o   Selecting and justifying appropriate sampling techniques

o   Assessing the representativeness of respondents

o   Students will be requested to determine sample size for a hypothetical group.

12 ·         Introduction to data management in SPSS

o   What is SPSS?

o    SPSS structure, interface, and windows.

o   Define the dataset variables and their attributes.

o   Codebook and data gathering tools.

o   Import data to SPSS to create datasets.

o   Clean and filter datasets and manage missing data;.

o   Perform data manipulation and transformation.

o   Descriptive statistics and frequencies.

o   Data distributions and central tendencies: mean, mode, and median.

o   Dispersion: range, variance, standard deviation, skewness, kurtosis, percentiles, and interquartile.

o   Generating and analyzing basic graphical presentations;.

13 ·         Data analysis using SPSS

o   Exploratory Factor analysis

o   Reliability test

o   Descriptive analysis (Graphs: Bar Chart, Pie Chart, Histogram, Scatter Plot/ Cross-tabs)

  • Calculating Measures of Central Tendency and Variability.
Student should Report the descriptive analysis by the end of this week
14 ·         Statistical techniques to explore relationships among variables- Predictive Models using SPSS

  • Correlation

15 Statistical tests to compare groups

  • One Sample T Test
  • Independent Samples T Test
  • Paired Samples T Test
  • One-Way ANOVA

Non- Parametric analysis

  • Chi-Square test
Learner should Report the compare analysis by the end of this week
16 Basic mediation and Moderation analysis in SPSS

  • Mediation Test

Learner should complete all the findings report and discussion
