JOB SUMMARY; The IYCF Counsellor will be required to work under the direct supervision of the project Officer and will be responsible for implementing IYCF program activities including the formation of mother’s support groups, counselling and supervision of IYCF counselling sessions in Mataban and Afgoye districts through food security project funded by Caritas Germany. The actions IYCF counsellor are aimed at contributing the reduction of acute malnutrition among children 6-59 months in Afgoye and Mataban Districts.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The IYCFCounselor is expected to implement the IYCF activities planned and community activities to ensure the sustainability of IYCF activities at village level
  • Recruit,train and mentor IYCF lead mothers for each village to support with mother support group activities and sustain the susport groups beyond the project duration.
  • Ensure formation of the mother support group at the community level (in each village) and community IYCF counseling conducted for the group members on regular basis
  • Identify model mothers and explore their best experience and replicate the best experience to improve IYCF practice within the community
  • Provide appropriate counseling for PLW, care takers and mother groups on breast feeding, complementary feeding, and maternal and child nutrition
  • Identify/develop appropriate IEC materials and flash cards in local language and ensure that the materials are used during each counseling
  • Develop weekly and monthly plan towards accomplishment of the IYCF activities and monitor the plan accordingly
  • Document case studies regularly and share with project team member as necessary.
  • Produce monthly report regarding IYCF activities undertaken.
  • Establish and entrench family led MUAC activities in the target villages to improve IMAM coverage and contribute to early detection and referral of children with acute malnutrition.
  • Establish patent referral pathway for children with acute malnutrition by mapping IMAM services in the area and creating referral linkages to improve continuum of care for children 6-59 moths with acute malnutrition.
  • Undertake regular field visits to monitor and closely supervise the established mothers support groups. Prepare field visit plans and supervision checklists in advance of trips.
  • Ensure to liaise with District medical officers in the formation and subsequent implementation of IYCF activities.

  • Ability to work in remote and eventually unstable environment
  • Friendly and able to engage local communities with respect.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of nursing, human nutrition, or relevant discipline.
  • 2 years’ experience in primary health care. Previous experience in IYCF is an added advantage.
  • Able to think and work independently
  • Female applicants are preferred for the position.
  • Fluent in English and Somali.
  • Applicants from the target districts who have clear understanding of the local context will be prioritized.
  • Ability to manage and work within a team
