Job Title: Midwife

Location:  Heliwa – SOS Hospital

Job Summary:

Midwives are expected to provide advice, care and support for women and their partners and families before, during and after childbirth. They help women make their own decisions about the care and services they access. They care for newborn children, providing health education and parenting support. Midwifes are personally responsible for the health of both mother and child and only refer to obstetricians if there are medical complications. They work in multidisciplinary teams in both hospital and, increasingly, community healthcare settings.


This job description outlines only the general scope of activity and the basic tasks and responsibilities associated with this position. It may be supplemented with a more detailed definition of tasks and responsibilities and is subject to change at the discretion of the employee’s immediate supervisor.

Main duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Providing full antenatal care, including screening tests in the clinic, community and at home;
  2. identifying high risk pregnancies and making referrals to doctors and other medical specialists;
  3. Arranging and providing parenting and health education for the woman, her partner and family members;
  4. Encouraging participation of family members in the birth to support the mother and enhance both mother/baby bonding and family relationships;
  5. Providing counselling and advice before and after screening;
  6. Offering support and advice following events such as miscarriage, termination, stillbirth, neonatal abnormality and neonatal death;
  7. Supervising and assisting mothers in labour, monitoring the condition of the foetus and using knowledge of drugs and pain management;
  8. Giving support and advice on the daily care of the baby, including breast feeding, bathing and making up feeds;
  9. Providing advice and guidance on a safe and timely transfer home; liaising with agencies and other health and social care professionals to ensure continuity of care;
  10. Engaging in professional development to meet PREP (post-registration education and practice) requirements;

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in Midwifery.
  • 2 years’ experience as midwife, and having worked in delivery/maternity unit.
