Organizational Background

The Somaliland Family Health Association (SOFHA) is a national non-government, non-profit, and non-political organization .Since 2009 SOFHA has been engaged SRHR. Providing clinical services; community health education, Nutrition, capacity building of Health Care Workers and other relevant actors in SRHR; and advocacy and lobbying SOFHA Program seeks applications from highly skilled and competent candidates to fill the following five vacancies to be based in Hargiesa.

Overall Job Purpose

Provide comprehensive advice, care and support to women and their babies during pregnancy, labour and early postnatal period. Conduct a clean, safe delivery and provide care to the newborn. Refer emergency cases to effectively prevent maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity in compliance with National and SOFHA health policy guidelines and established midwifery care standards and treatment protocols.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Monitor and administer medication, injections and intravenous infusions during labour
  • Provide information, emotional support and reassurance to women in labour and their partners
  • Ensures that obstetrical emergencies within her/his capacity are well managed and that referrals of complicated cases are done in a timely manner
  • Provides full antenatal care, including screening tests in SDPs
  • Monitor and administer medication, injections and intravenous infusions during labour
  • Supervises and assists mothers in labor, monitoring the condition of the fetus and using knowledge of drugs and pain management
  • Provide support to women during labour and birth to ensure normal delivery of the new born
  • Manage complications in childbirth, according to the principles of obstetric care
  • Support parents to cope with miscarriage, termination, stillbirth and neonatal death
  • Monitor progress of the mother during postnatal period and advice on infant care
  • Raise requisitions for replenishment of drugs, consumable supplies for childbirth and care
  • Promotes clean deliveries in facilities and outreach sites
  • Work day shifts and night shifts as per the Rota

Operations Management 

  • Promotes clean deliveries in facilities and outreach sites
  • Identify capacity-building needs of the auxiliary and volunteer nursing team and ensure they are properly trained
  • Participate in emergency preparedness, rapid assessments and emergency responses
  • Conducts in service training of personnel and volunteers
  • Makes ethical decisions related to consent and confidentiality
  • Performs routine HIV counseling, testing, referring clients to the consultant services as necessary
  • Provides support and advice on the daily care of the baby, including breast feeding, bathing and making up feeds
  • Promotes health and wellness, particularly for maternal and child health.


  • Observes and respects professional and work norms and ethics at all times while on official duty
  • Implements courses to train for village midwives, in undertaking safe motherhood initiatives including safe delivery, management of complications, post natal follow up, STI diagnosis and treatment and health education relevant to MCH
  • Develop and enhance relationships with strategic partners, donors, local authorities and community leaders to maximize support for maternal and child health
  • Represent SOFHA in relevant conferences, seminars, workshops and meetings
  • Participates in community meetings for women’s groups, community leaders in planning and delivery of appropriate family health services.
  • Provides SDP customers with comprehensive advice and counseling on of SRHR including advice on contraception
  • Supports the development of new projects for SOFHA family health programs in collaboration with the Clinic Manager, Head of programs and the ED of the Association
  • Ensures the dissemination of health education messages to mothers and the community
  • Performs all other activities as prescribed by her supervisor

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Bachelor degree in Nursing- Midwifery or higher  
  1. Minimum in two years managing labour and delivery, including monitoring vital signs, assessing progress as well as physically managing deliveries
  2. Fluent in written and spoken Somali and competent in written and spoken  English
  3. Computer proficiency in Word, Power Point, Excel is a requirement
