                                                   Nutrition Officer

TEAM/PROGRAMME: Nutrition Programme   LOCATION: Adado
GRADE:  4 POST TYPE:  National
Child Safeguarding:

Level 3 – the responsibilities of the post may require the post holder to have regular contact with or access to children or young people


To ensure that the CMAM programe is functioning properly, providing care of quality to all the beneficiaries, respecting protocols and principles of good practice.


Reports to: Nutrition Coordinator

Dimensions: Save the Children works in almost all regions in Somalia/Somaliland with a current staff complement of approximately 650 staff and a current expenditure of approximately US$ 120 million each year.

Staff directly reporting to this post  OTP/TSFP Nurses, Mobilizers and Data Clerk


Primary Purpose:

·         To ensure that the Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) program is functioning properly, providing care of quality to all the beneficiaries, respecting protocols and principles of good practice.

·         Program Responsibilities: Protocol, Procedure, and Referrals

·         Plan and organize Outpatient Therapeutic Program (OTP) / Supplementary Feeding Program (SFP) at designated distribution sites in liaison with the Nutrition Program Manager;

·         Ensure adequate triage / that new arrivals are seen as a priority;

·         Ensure cases not meeting admission criteria return home as early as possible and ensure the parent/caregiver understands why their child is not admitted;

·         Ensure that appropriate referrals take place to and from the OTP/SFP;

·         Work with the Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) Counselor to ensure that CMAM beneficiaries are referred to IYCF services when required;

·         Ensure comprehensive health checks and treatment according to the agreed protocols;

·         Liaise with the Community Outreach/Nutrition Workers to provide effective follow-up of all cases – and particularly ensure the prompt tracing of children who are absent from the program;

·         Request specific children to be followed up as required (newly enrolled children, sick children, long-stay children, children not gaining weight, children with social problems etc.);

·         Respect the dignity of the beneficiaries, carers and members of the community;

·         Assist in any other tasks when required.


·         Review the forms completed by staff to ensure completion, accuracy and coherence;

·         Submit a daily tally of the OTP/SFP statistics;

·         Submit a weekly report of the tally of statistics for each site (one form per site per week);

·         Report any progress and any problems in a timely manner.

Team Supervision, Management and Capacity Building:

·         Supervise the activities of the OTP/SFP team at the distribution point;

·         Ensure all OTP/SFP team members are familiar with their posts;

·         Re-define team composition as necessary – either during distributions (to avoid bottle-necks) or after discussion during team meetings;

·         Work closely with the teams to ensure all children are measured correctly;

·         Ensure all criteria are respected and understood by the teams, including admission, discharge and transfer to and from the various components of the program;

·         Undertake individual evaluations with the team;

·         Attend regular nutrition meetings.

Supplies and Logistics:

·         Complete and submit order forms to the logistics team for materials, medicine and food requirements for each site a week in advance;

·         Ensure adequate availability of all medical and food supplies for each distribution, offer input into the creation and maintenance of a monthly distribution plan, and ensure stock is pre-positioned as planned with the Nutrition coordinator and logistics team.

Advocacy and Communication:

·         Work with SCI staff and officials to ensure all aspects of the program are understood and agreed by SCI

·         Working with the Community Mobilizer, ensure the engagement of community leaders or their designates for the organization of the arrivals outside of the center;

·         Liaise with the Community Mobilizer to ensure comprehensive community outreach and mobilization, health education and treatment. Check that all messages to carers, community groups, leaders and authorities are consistent and fully understood.


Person specification


·         Qualified nurse with primary health care / community health care experience

  • Diploma in Public Health, Food & Nutrition, Nursing or equivalent
  • experience in emergency nutrition work and implementation of feeding programmes, including monitoring and evaluation
  • Experience of and commitment to utilizing participatory approaches.
  • Experience in nutrition assessments and understanding of nutritional surveillance and information systems.
  • Proven capacity to supervise, train and coach local staff and community workers.

·         Excellent communication skills and a willingness to be respectful, kind, sensitive and empathise with all beneficiaries and their carers

  • Willingness and capacity to be flexible and accommodating when faced with difficult and frustrating working

·         Ability and willingness to frequently travel and stay in the field

  • Strong report writing and computer skills
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • Previous experience of working with humanitarian agencies

·         Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children’s aims, values and principles.



  • Health / Public Health / Nutrition / Agriculture BSc or equivalent
