The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance. The ICRC also endeavours to prevent suffering by promoting and strengthening humanitarian law and universal humanitarian principles.




About the Job

The Protection Field Officer contributes to the planning, implementation, monitoring and documentation of ICRC Protection activities in Huddur region.

This is a resident/National position based in Huddur, Somalia.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the implementation of Protection of Civilian Population (PCP) activities
  • Conducts field assessments either independently or as part of ICRC multidisciplinary teams focusing on the humanitarian needs of affected populations
  • Supports the restoring family links (RFL) team in the follow up of specific individual RFL cases
  • Contributes to the assessment and identification of priority protection issues for further monitoring and follow up
  • Acts as the focal point in the Community based Protection (CBP) activities, working closely with the Head of Antenna and Protection Delegate to ensure proper implementation of the CBP project cycle and involvement of relevant departments in this process
  • Represents the ICRC during discussions with the concerned communities and ensures that creative suggestions are incorporated in a bid to address the protection issues raised by the communities
  • Liaise with the different interlocutors and stakeholders on varying issues of interest when required
  • Contributes to the definition of the annual objectives and plans of actions of the ICRC Protection department
  • Monitors the political, economic and social developments and their impact on the population within the region
  • In coordination with the Head of Antenna identifies humanitarian needs resulting from conflict or violence and proposes a course of action
  • Prepares the operational reports and regularly gives an account of the on ongoing activities including multidisciplinary assessments

Minimum qualifications and required competencies

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences, Development Studies, Law or equivalent qualification in a related field of study
  • 4 years of experience in a similar field of activity
  • Knowledge of International Humanitarian Law/International Human Rights Law is an asset
  • Ability to network, represent the organization externally and dialogue with major stakeholders
  • Fluency in both oral and written communication in English and Somali, ability to communicate in Maay and Maxaatiri will be an added advantage
  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills
  • Upholds a high sense of responsibility and confidentiality
  • Computer proficiency especially in MS Office suite
