Job Description




GREDO is an indigenous local NGO. Non-profit non-partial, non- political and voluntary organization based in Baidoa. To reach the most affected grass-root communities in Bay and Bakool regions effectively and efficiently, the necessity of local partnership in relief program appeared. Responding to the partnership need, a group of Somali intellectuals and well-wishers initiated in December 1992 a local non-governmental organization called Gargaar Relief and Development Organization GREDO). The organization has implemented during these period different projects including relief and emergency programs and later improved into rehabilitation and developmental programs.

Agriculture is an important economic activity in Somalia not only in terms of meeting the food needs of the population but also in terms of generating income through crop sales and agricultural labor opportunities. Most of the households depend their livelihood in crop production alongside with livestock rearing. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) estimated in 2014 that the number of agro-pastoralists are 2.8 million which makes about 23 percent of the total population depend on settled crop production and livestock rearing. They are located mainly in the interriverine regions of Bay, Bakool, western Hiran, and eastern Gedo in Southern Somalia but also in certain rural areas in southwestern and northwestern Somalia with underground water and high levels of precipitation.

Due to prolonged instability and recurrent droughts, the agriculture sector has been devastated, food insecurity has become a major syndrome in the wider community causing displacement of the rural people to major cities of the country such Mogdishu and Baidoa. According to UNOCHA Humanitarian Bulletin (5-February 2019), over More than 1.5 million people in

Somalia are still facing acute food security crisis or worse, as a result of the below-average Deyr rainy season (OctDec), displacement from the 2016/2017 drought and protracted conflict in some parts of the country. household incomes have been drastically reduced due to loss and/or deterioration of livestock and crop failures, which are main income sources for the affected populations.

GREDO in partnership with SCI is implementing Short term regional emergency response (STRERP) project which is a multi-area project funded by AFDB/IGAD and targets for about 35 districts of 13 regions across Somalia. The Specific Objective of this programme is provide emergency food assistance and medical aid to the most vulnerable populations in Somalia, as well as put in place the preliminary building blocks to strengthen links between the production, distribution and consumption hubs of the food systems in the affected regions, leading to increased system-wide efficiency and longer-term resilience. The project has many outputs such as food voucher, water supply, fodder voucher, AWD response, food for community assets, etc.

In order to improve crop production, 1,150 households (Dinsoor: 350 HH, Burhakaba: 300 HH and Wanlaweyn 550 HHs) will be trained on improved agricultural practices. The beneficiaries of this activity will be typically 5 days training of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP).

GAP are “practices that address environmental, economic and social sustainability for on-farm processes, and result in safe and quality food and non-food agricultural products” (FAO COAG 2003 GAP paper). The training covers topics such as land preparations, composting, crop rotation, minimum village, crop pest management, timely planting, managing field crops, irrigation water use and management, fertilizer application and post-harvest management.


The duration of the training will be 5 days (two days’ theory and three days’ field practical), 1,150 participants will be trained in three districts.

The training will improve the knowledge of the beneficiaries towards good agricultural practices and increased production, food sufficiency and sustainable agriculture development.


  • Increase the knowledge of the farmers on basic concepts of farming practices such as land preparations, composting, integrated pest management, intercropping and post-harvest management.
  • Ensure dairy farming practices do not have an adverse impact on the local environment
  • Increase farm productivity and access to safe and sufficient foods


The overall training process will be highly experiential and participatory. The training approach involves various techniques including but not limited to Brainstorming, Interactive Q and A, Group work exercises, role play and farmer field schools whereby the trainees are fully participated in the field by practicing different agricultural methodologies. The trainees will be provided two days of theoretical lessons and followed by three days of practical seasons by farmer field schools through a participatory, learning discovery extension approach where

farmers are empowered to make sound and informed production decisions on their farms which is environmental friendly and climate smart.

Specifically, the consultant will undertake the following key tasks.

  • Conduct a needs assessment or access one from the program staff.
  • Analyze relevant project documents.
  • Present an inception training plan complete with Goals, objectives, topic and subtopics, methodology, session plans, teaching aids, activities and expected outcomes for each presentation.
  • Prepare a training program to include the topics such as land preparations, composting, crop rotation, minimum village, crop pest management, timely planting, managing field crops, irrigation water use and management, fertilizer application and post-harvest management.
  • Prepare session  plans,  field  practice  schedules,  tools,  equipment’s,  and  handouts

Deliver the training through participative methodologies.

  • Administer daily feedback forms and end of training evaluation.
  • Write draft and final report –Include follow-up and implementation schedules.

8.0 QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE OF THE CONSULTANT To qualify for this assignment, the consultant Have minimum degree in Agriculture science.

Demonstrated experience and proven record in undertaking similar assignments
